Birthday Cakes of Birthday Past

One week before Christmas I became an adult and you know what that means? Cake. My 18th birthday provided the greatest excuse ever to make an awesome birthday cake. Saying that this cake was large is an understatement, the fact that we ate birthday cake for dessert for about a week gives a better idea of the size!

Although, I had my heart set on making a Yolanda Gampp megacake for my birthday, I came to my senses and realised there was no way on this earth that I could gather enough people to eat one of those cakes. So I decided to make this one that I found on pinterest instead. Smaller yes...but still pretty darn mega. This cake had one layer of brownie cake, one layer of oreo cake and one layer of cookie cake, plus all of the ganache, chocolate buttercream and the biscuit halves around the top! I had lots of fun making this cake!

However, if I was to make it again, I would omit the brownie layer as it was quite rich and was my least favourite of the three. The oreo layer had to be the best one because it was really light and fluffy. This was due to it having egg whites (no yolks) and yoghurt in the batter.

I have been making my own Birthday cake for the past three years and everyone thinks I am mad, but I really do enjoy it.
Last year I made a Jaffa flavoured cake (a cupcake Jemma recipe), it had three layers of chocolate orange sponge and was iced with chocolate ganache.

My cake is a little lopsided as I hadn't yet accumulated my cornucopia of cake decorating tools!
On my 16th birthday I combined my two favourite things - lemon meringue pie and cake. This cake was also a Cupcake Jemma recipe! It had three layers of lemon sponge, lemon buttercream, lemon curd and marshmallow icing. It was AMAZING and I got to use my blow torch (which is definitely an added bonus)! I did consider making this cake again this year because it was so good.

This image wasn't taken with the camera I use now, so the quality is not the best! But you can get the idea of what it looked like.
